We would definitely recommend this service for anyone who needs a hearing test done for their child”

If you have concerns about your child’s hearing  and would prefer to be seen at home rather than in a busy outpatient clinic then  why not book an appointment for them to have a hearing test. Peter Byrom has had extensive training and experience in assessing children’s hearing loss and can also provide tympanometry to assess middle ear function. Here’s what one mum said:

“‘ We found the service to be incredibly efficient and had an appointment at our home which was both very convenient and stress free for our son. Peter had a very nice manner with our son who very much enjoyed the ‘games’ he played and the tests were done  quickly and easily. You could be out on the golf course, walking the dog, fishing, enjoying the countryside; there’s a gentle breeze blowing and all you can hear is wind noise in your hearing aids. This is typical of most hearing aids available today, and I hear the same complaint again and again.

” I can’t hear what’s being said because of the wind noise.”

There is no need, however, to put up with this annoyance. Modern technology has enabled hearing aids to focus on speech even in the presence of strong wind. Turbulence that creates wind noise around hearing aid microphones has been successfully removed from speech input so that even in windy conditions, a conversation may be held without interference. I saw this being tested and in action at the recent Phonak launch of the Audeo Q range of hearing aids.

A KEMAR dummy using Audeo hearing aids

What you can see in the picture is KEMAR dummy with Phonak Audeo hearing aids in place  and wind noise being created around those hearing aids by the use of a small electric fan.  Speech from conversation is  picked up by the hearing aids and transmitted to delegates using headphones.  I clearly heard the speech without any wind noise and it; truly amazing!

If you would like to try these hearing aids, with a full money back guarantee; if you’re the “outdoors” type, but frustrated by the poor quality of speech in these environments then call 0114 233 1800 to book an appointment.

    lace_logo

LACE is an acronym for Listening And Communication Enhancement. Conceived by leading audiologists at the University of California at San Francisco, LACE is an interactive computerized aural rehabilitation program that has already helped thousands of people who live with some degree of hearing loss increase their listening skills by up to 45%.

We don’t really hear in our ears; we hear in our brain. Hearing aids can help a person detect softer sounds, but they don’t necessarily provide good listening skills.

Even people with normal hearing can be poor listeners. Good listening skills is one of the essential components in effective communication.

Other components include rapid thought processing, auditory memory, use of language skills, and interactive strategies. Additionally, the confidence that what you thought you heard was what was actually spoken is vital.

These abilities can be damaged both by hearing loss and by the natural aging process. LACE is designed to enhance the ability to communicate by training the brain to best utilize these skills.

Just as physical therapy can help rebuild muscles and adjust movements to compensate for physical weakness or injury, LACE will help you develop skills and strategies to deal with situations when hearing is inadequate. Whether you wear hearing aids, are just acquiring aids, or simply wish to improve your listening skills, LACE training will help you get the most out of the sounds of life.

LACE is available for Windows 7, XP, Vista and Apple OSX 10.4 or newer computer systems and on most home DVD players for use on your home Television.

The United Kingdom version is now available

Delroy Thomas - Production Manager for Phonak Nano, with Peter Byrom

Over an evening meal I discussed the quality control measures put in place to ensure that the hearing aids produced are always of  the highest standard. Phonak are very much attuned to high manufacturing standards and it was evident that Delroy not only knows exactly what he is doing but thoroughly enjoys the job too.

Recently we spent Christmas at my brothers house in Australia. He lives on the beautiful Barbie Island about an hours drives north of Brisbane. We made the most of the surf but our two youngest ended up with very painful ears. Turned out to be swimmers ear and it took a long drive to get a prescription to treat the problem.

If I had known about Earol Swim® it could have saved a lot of time, effort and pain. Can you imagine what it is like trying to put drops in young children’s ears when they don’t really want them because of the pain. The youngest certainly didn’t understand the benefits of the drops and wriggled vigorously.

Earol Swin® is a combination of olive oil and tea trea oil and is delivered by a spray which gives just the right amount every time. This combination has natural anti-fungal, anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-infection properties and when combined with the pump action metered spray delivery system will help prevent the incidence of Trapped Water & Swimmer’s Ear.

Each pack contains 200 doses of product and has a validated 3 year shelf life.

The product is packaged into a bespoke and unique injection moulded carry case which has a robust re-sealable lid which allows the product to be carried in dive bags, swim bags, pool or beach bags without chance of the product being actuated or being broken. The carry has been designed to float if dropped into the water.

Earol Swim® isn’t just for holidays, protect your families ears when they visit the swimming baths too.

I would be delighted will visit you at home, examine your ears and provide you with a free hearing test.

If there is any wax blocking your ear canal, I am fully trained and have the experience  to carefully remove it. If you need to soften the wax prior to removal I can provide you with a bottle of Earol.

    pound signThere is a problem

Using finance to purchase any item  is expensive. Whether the retailer pays a subsidy  to the finance provider and offers “interest free finance” or adds interest to the cost of goods; the goods become more expensive.

    The benefits without the cost?

For premium hearing instruments there is a new way to purchase with much of the benefit and little of the cost associated with using finance.

    How?

A new company called The Hearing Project can offer you a simple care plan approach which eases the financial burden of paying for everything up front.

A small joining fee gives access to the manufacturers price list. This is the price that the manufacturers charge dispensers for hearing aids.

Having purchased the aid at manufacturers  price, a small monthly contribution covers all maintenance, battery and sundries.

Peter Byrom is able to supply your hearing aids through The Hearing Project. If you are interested, visit The Hearing Project website.

On Tuesday 13th of March, in Chesterfield,  Oticon launched the new invisible hearing aid, the Intiga i. Similar to Phonaks Nano and Starkey’s Otolens, the Intego i brings some new features to the market. I attended the launch and had breakfast with Bob Newport who is Oticon’s representative for Ireland. We discussed hearing aid fitting strategies, including Speech Mapping and Real Ear Measurements. The main focus of the day though was the new aid.

    Intigai with coffee beans

As you can see, when compared to a coffee bean, the Intiga is super small for a hearing aid.

This illustrates the Intiga and the Intiga i next to a champagne cork. I think you’ll agree, they are small stylish and beautiful.

Oticon is renowned for the natural sound their hearing aids deliver.  Might you have a hearing loss? Is this the sort of aid you would like? Would you like a free hearing test and free no obligation advice? Call the office 0112 233 1800 and take the first step.

    Phonak Audeo Hearing Aid

Having had a hearing loss since I was young, but not ever having used hearing aids, I had reached the stage where I knew I had to take action in order to improve my hearing, particularly for the role I was undertaking at work.  I had tried NHS aids that didn’t satisfy me.  Also, some privately bought open-fit (receiver-in-the-ear) hearing aids did not suit either.  (The lack of follow up and confidence in the company didn’t encourage me).  Some time later, a friend recommended me to Peter Byrom.

I have been very impressed with Pete by his dedication to finding the best solution for me. He spent a great deal of time making sure that I had a pair of hearing aids that were comfortable and that sounded great.  They also look good and are completely inconspicuous!

He fitted me with a pair of Phonak Ambra Nano hearing aids which I use consistently and am delighted with.

Pete is an absolute professional and passionate about helping people improve their quality of life.  I highly recommend him.

On Friday 11th February 2012 I attended the Starkey Deep impression taking training course.  The course is for those dispensers who would like to fit the Soundlens invisible hearing aid. Also on the course was Jennifer Hennel  who is the new regional account manager for Starkey in the South Yorkshire Area. Jennifer has a psycholgy degree and has been a dispenser for over 12 years.  You can see the red foil covering her right ear which I placed as the final act of taking a deep impression for her. The final result passed the test first time and a delighted Jennifer is having some custom MP3 plugs made for her from the impressions I took.

    Hi Peter,

I would like to thank you from the bottom of my heart on behalf of mum. Her hearing has gradually deteriorated to the extent that without a hearing aid she can hear very little. Over the years she has been searching without success for an aid to enable her to join in group conversations, something she has found difficult.

Through your determination, patience and perseverance, she came home from the first whist drive wearing her new hearing aid and said she felt like a ‘real’ person. Mum issued you with three challenges, she wanted to be able to hear one to one conversations, to be able to hear the T.V. and to be able to join in conversations when she was at the whist drives. She can now do all three and the quality of her life has been much improved. We cannot thank you enough.

    Sue Orr and Mum

Buying a hearing aid is all very well, but it doesn’t matter if it is like a Robin Reliant or a Rolls Royce; if you cannot measure the output of the aid in the ear  in the ear and compare it to a level that it should be at, then it can be an expensive mistake.

The Aurical Freefit  is a tool for measuring hearing aid output in the ear. The harness rests on the shoulders with the reference microphone hanging by a blue rubber flex from the ear and a very fine single use probe microphone fits into the ear.Freefit set

The ability to adjust the hearing aid to the correct measured output is crucial to setting the hearing aid right first time. Many people are fitted with a method called click and fit, where no measurement of the output is made at all.  If you are considering a new hearing aid and would like your current hearing aids checked for output as part of the assessment process then contact the office now and we will make you a free no obligation hearing assessment appointment.GN Otometrics Aurical FreeFit on it's base side on image

A gradual awareness that my hearing was not all it should be led to lack of confidence and withdrawal from social situations. The TV was turned up too loud for the rest of the family who also became frustrated with having to repeat things all the time.

Eventually a family member came to rescue in recommending the services of Peter Byrom who visited my home and conducted a full no obligation assessment of my hearing impairment.

Peter subsequently provided me with two “CIC” hidden hearing aids which, to my delight, have completely transformed my life and made me realise just what I had been missing. I can now again enjoy all the things I used to including the simple things in life such as rain on the window panes and birdsong. In addition, at work I can contribute fully in meetings instead of having to guess at some of the words being said.

Peter also provides a complete after care service and nothing seems to be too much trouble for him. He sought out the best solution for my hearing loss and, in doing so, has restored the quality of my life. What more can I say?

    Mrs B Maciejewski, Sheffield
